Re: Help with cost and additional software

Actually it ISN'T !

WMSDE is MSDE 2.0 with most of the restrictions removed (2GB size limit;
throttling after more than 5 concurrent users) with only the restriction
that you use it for WSS databases only (and for MS web components))

SQL Server 2005 Express (which might work with WSS but I haven't tried it)
has similar restrictions to MSDE 2.0 only now the database size limit is
4GB. It still has performance throttling however. For your proposed numbers
this might not matter but it depends how many of them are accessing the
system at the same time.

Nevermind, I just found out that WMSDE IS SQL Server 2005 Express. Forgive
my
ignorance. ;^)

MSDE I figured would work, but I don't like losing the text search
function.
Would SQL Server 2005 Express work for that? I haven't looked into that
new
product at all, so i have no idea what it does. Thanks for the excellent
response.

1. Provided you run WSS (not SWS!) on the Intranet *it* is fre.

2. You still need to pay licenses for the Operating System. (in your
case no
doubt OS + CALs rather than enterprise.)

3. You can use the built-in WMSDE for the database for nothing. You
then
don't have Full-Text Search. For that you need SQL Server 2K and that
costs
normal SQL Server 2K license costs.

4. You can't use MySQL or any other database system that isn't SQL
Server 2K
or something (MSDE 2.0 WMSDE) based on that.

5. Templates can be downloaded. Which "those" are I don't know.

I am in charge of building a small intranet solution for our startup
bank
of
14 employees. We are running WS3. I am using the free trial of
Sharepoint
Services, but will host it locally once we implement it. My questions
are:
1. Is there any hidden cost to this? If we have SWS on WS3 already
and are
licensed for WS3, do we need additional licensing for using Services
(not
portal)?
2. Do we need anything else like MySQL to run this?
3. Can we download those templates on MS's site for Sharepoint
Services?
Thank you for any input.
