You might need to talk to someone who setup your SharePoint infrastructure. If SQL is on the backend, that's where all your data is going (attachments and all). Nothing is stored on the file system.

As for adding a SharePoint server, again, you need to address what problem you're having first (which sounds like a storage issue on the C: drive of your front-end web server running SharePoint). Adding another "SharePoint" server doesn't mean much because it can be used for various things (indexing, job, etc.) and only certain configurations are supported or possible.

Check the admin guide on a small server farm configuration but only if you really need it as I don't think adding more hardware at this problem is going to solve anything.
