WSS can be installed in what's called Active Directory Creation Mode (I think that's the official term). It means any new users who log into the site will have an AD account (all users of the system have to have an account) provisioned and created for them. In AD mode you specify the information that it needs to create the accounts (like a separate OU to hold the new accounts). You can read up about it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsc05.mspx
Note: You must install WSS initially with this option setup, you can't "revamp" and existing setup after the fact.
This option is also only available to WSS and cannot be used with SPS (but since this is the WSS ng it shouldn't matter, but you mentioned SPS)

I have a question about WSS can implement user register? Like discussion board that user can register by himself and system reply or administrator to verify the user? Can WSS implement it? How? Any reference? If WSS can't, how about SPS? Thanks for any advice!
