WSS authentication is governed by IIS. How have you configured the IIS
virtual server?
The default authetnication is Windows Integrated, however, I'll make
the assumption that you have selected Basic Authentication since you
mentioned that you are using this over the internet.
Basic Authentication does not have a timeout. As long as the browser
remains open, you will maintain the authenticated session with the IIS
server. This session should be closed when you close the browser. If
you can close the browser and reopen it without reauthentication, it
means that something is keeping the session open with the IIS server.
