I hope Bill English jumps in here because he is my SharePoint administration hero! :) The quick answer to your quection about synchronization is no.
But not all hope is lost, you can create an AD Security Group and use that in SharePoint. For example, you can create an AD Security Group called policy_readers and add that group to a site, giving it permissions to view items. Now, anyone that is a member of the AD Group will have permissions to view items on that site.

Is there a way to have the permissions on a WSS site controlled by membership of an AD group so that as the AD group changes the WSS site permissions are automatically synchronized?
