Database Limit for WSS and Performance

What is the limit of a WSS Site (its own Virtual Directory in IIS and own
Content DB in SQL)? I assume since it is SQL 200 based, that there is NO
limit. My only concern is that eventually, there will be performance
related issue.

Can someone clarify this please? Assuming that performance will degrade
overtime due to growth of DB, what are some items to consider and proactive
approaches to minimize this effect or performance?
