Aah, maybe I'm stuck in "things not to do in SharePoint Team Services [not
WSS] mode" in this case.
With that product doing the equivalent of that caused maybe a quarter of all
problem posts.
Aplogies to all. Sometimes these things stick in your head and block out all
reason.
