Overkill maybe. But excludes all possible problems and I would be planning
to use the server for a long time so I want to be 100% sure I have a
standard installation and FDisk and formatting ensures that.
Given the time you need to take IF strange things happen, I prefer to spend
a small amount of time up front (when I have the time) to avoid having such
things *maybe* bother me later on (when there are very likely users
screaming at me).
What people decide to do is up to them and is dependant on their own
experiences. I've been long enough in this business to have (for instance)
only one in three saves to floppy disk work (Osborne 1) so I've learnt that
safety first is a good motto.
