it is pretty clear to me that we will have to do some more intensive
user training to avoid these pitfalls.

The problem comes really from the fact that in the old SPS2001, when
clicking on documents, the document could be opened in Browser view
depending on the local settings of the DOC document type (this makes it
clear to most users that the document is read-only). In the 2003
version (SPS and WSS), documents open in Word (read-only, but this is
overlooked by the most); furthermore, when trying to save back, the
document library from where the document was opened is displayed in
Office 2003 as the default place for saving back documents.

Is there a way to reset the old behaviour, particularly to open
documents in the browser? Perhaps this is not the right thread (I might
make it also an own thread since it's a new topic) ...
