The default install should not ask you to specify the database because the
installation of WMSDE is part of the default install so it knows where it
is. The webfarm install would on the other hand need to ask where the
database is because it does not install a database system
There is no other way to get WMSDE that I know of except as part of WSS.
Sorry to be of no more help.
One possible attempt would be start from an empty machine again and do as
you did with one exception.
Install Standard Win 2003 Server *without* SP1
Then IIS with asp.net no fpse
Then WSS with SP1 - default install.
This should work.
Then upgrade the Win 2003 Server to SP1.
The reason why this might be better is that WSS SP1 came out before Win 2003
Server SP1.
