Sharepoint Services problems

I'm in HIGH hopes someone can help me here. I'm working with MS Sharepoint
Services and have our intranet site migrated to a new server. I haven't been
able to post anything to this site I keep getting this error:
SQL Server Error
The SQL Server might not be started.
If this problem persists, please contact your administrator.
I found an article in the MS KB and looked at everything like Registry
settings and SQL server itself and the database is in fact up and running,
NOT in read only or restricted mode.
There is a level of connectivity to the database because I am able to edit
entries that already exist.
I'm at wits end as to what to look at next.
