For the main differences between Office 2K; Office XP and Office 2003 and
WSS (which is this newsgroup) look at the "Good, Better, Best paper from
Microsoft (listed in the WSS FAQ / Useful Documents / MS Articles section).
You are right however that if your users are using Office XP and Edit in MS
Word, they should be able to Save to the site.
Make therefore sure (by running the Office setup) that they are specifying
SharePoint support for Office XP (towards the end of the parameters for
common office things). This is the default setting for Office 2003 but not
(as far as I can remember) for Office XP.
