OK. I had to go and do it myself to get the exact details.

As said you open the site in FP 2003 then open default.aspx.

You then click on **the particular quick launch section** (for instance
Lists) you want to sort.

This selects that section and makes it black.

Right-click. You get the list of options I talked about. Halway down there
is Link Bar Properties. Select that and you'll see the Move Up Move Down
possibility for the list items listed (by default for Lists these are
Contacts and Tasks). Save etc. after making the changes.

You can only sort within section. (Documents / Pictures / Lists /
Discussions / Surveys)

(My memory was playing me tricks because in STS 1.0 there is only one Quick
Launch section).
