Sorry, I was thinking that if a team member didn't have permissions to, say,
the Announcements list, the Announcements list view Web Part might display
nothing. But on further inspection, the Web Part displays an Access Denied
message.

Unfortuantely, when you add a Web Part to a page (or modify one) there are
no permission settings. You would have to configure the default page with
only those items everyone can see, and then tell the privileged team members
how to add additional Web Parts to their personal view.

It seems that someone could write a "wrapper" Web Part that tested
permissions before running another Web Part. If a given team member didn't
have permission to something, they would see nothing rather than an Access
Denied message or a username prompt. The tricky part would be testing
permissions when the current team member isn't an administrator. I guess the
"wrapper" Web part would have to impersonate an admin when checking
permissions, but not when running the target Web Part.
