Brilliant ;-)

Thanks for the answer. You are right I got the subject wrong (due to
writing it late at night frustrated as hell).

When I did the installation of WSS it did not extend the default site as I
had already installed FP extensions on it.

When I used the web admin to extend a virtual server, it all went smoothly.
Since posting this I have run the Sharepoint Configuration Analyser and I
see what you mean. It does show that the default web parts are
installed....they are just not working.

As stated in a previous posting I am getting the typical behaviour that
Microsoft suggest that I should get (i.e. could not retrieve properties) and
the soap error in Frontpage when I try and either try to use the default web
parts or edit the site with frontpage. However even after trying to rectify
the problem by a) changing the virtual server not to be a host header
accessed site and as well as that b) extending a new server that was "all
ip-address" accessible, I am still cannot get the web parts to function.

So I am stuck.....I think there may be two possible solutions but don't know
how to implement either of them.

1. In the admin guide it says web parts installed on virtual servers that
are host header enabled should be installed in the GAC. I am not sure how
to find out if the default parts are installed there or not.

2. It also mentioned something about trusts but I am not sure how to set
these (although I could most probably mess with the config files enough to
find out something) but I don't even know the names and keys for the default
web parts so am well up the creek.

Does anybody have the default web parts working on a server that is host
header enabled?

Thanks very much for your time.
