Just to add on
its happening on other local setup of my own
(on enterprise edition, wss , ads , sql 2k)
i have tried everything
1) resetting/recycling application pool, iss start stop
also i notice one table in site content database "userinfo"
that also has enry referring to user which had been removed from front end ( site settings/ manage user-remove selected users.)
this is really srange
