Thanks. Regarding backup my idea was to backup the indiviual files, not the
full database data. I.e. using a file syncronisation programme, which copy
the files from the mapped drives to the backup media. This should make no
difference from the file server solution.
Space is probably not the biggest problem, hard disk capacity is not so
expensive.
However, then there are the other issues that you point out.
The conclusion might be that it is a bad idea.
