In that case try to find the item in the WSS FAQ about how to add a user that was already deleted. This possibly is what you have. It would certainly give this message in WSS (you are defining the user as servername\username I hope !)

The system isn't yet sure that it is deleted and you need to do something (in the FAQ) to tell it the user is really gone.
