Thanks Mike - yes I think it was a matter of not having list rights on the WSS site and I also rebuilt the indices and turned indexing on and off in the WSS admin console (@ the same time as changing the list rights - stupid right! - so I don't really know what fixed it). I assume I'm running SQL full-text - I checked and this component was installed on the SQL server (by doing an "add" SQL component setup exercise) and the following services are running :
On the Sharepoint server : Microsoft SharePointPS Search
On the SQL server : Microsoft Search and MSSQLSERVER
