This sounds entirely like my issue so if you don't mind could you try something?

Connect to the site using the server name. (Work Yes/No)
Connect to the site using the alias (if applicable) (Work Yes/No)
Connect to the site using the IP Address (Work Yes/No)

Lastly, add in your local machines hosts file the server name or alias and IP. Now try it (Work Yes/No) If it works, remove the entry and try again.

I'm just curious cause the symptoms are so similar and the steps only take a second to do. Thanks.
