My server is in the corp dns. And it's been on port 80.

It is asking for the local machine account for those that
get prompted.

So half of this message does make sense.

But DNS hasn't changed nor have I modified any entries.

>Not sure if this relates but I had this same problem with
our production environment and found out it was not IIS
nor was it Sharepoint but sadly DNS. For some reason when
I had the site setup with a specified port other than 80
it would prompt for a password (unless added in the local
hosts file manually, you may want to try this out and test
if DNS is the problem). Once I reverted the site back to
the default port and just changed the IP and reassigned
the alias in DNS it worked like a champ. Not quite sure
what the deal is with this but it's worth a shot if you
are using a non-standard port for your site. Plus as a
note, Sharepoint Admins, if I remember correctly, may work
as you have found because I think they are then considered
local administrators over the local box, which then if you
look at the login prompt on a user that is failing you
will notice it is actually asking for a machine account
and not a domain account. Again, this may not actually be
any help at all but it does sound similar to my problem.
