Go ahead and image the machine. Set up a host header for the new name. If
you really meant \\netbios name there is a Registry setting that will
register a secondary netbios name for a computer. The KB article was in
reference to printers, but I can't find it right now.

if that's not an option, STSADM will back your root site up and restore it.
