Add users : Requested timed out

We use WSS hosted under OSPS2003 in our Intranet.
When we add users in a site group, WSS queries the internal Active
Directory and pickups the Email Address (using UserPrincipale Name or
Mail) , Display Name and SAM account name. That is great.

However, if there is a unknown SMTP Email address among the list,
after a very long time, an error page is displayed
(_layouts/1033/AclVer.aspx) with the following message :

Error : Request timed out

Does anybody know this problem. Is there a workaround to avoid this
message ?
