I know what it's like. I used to do the same thing for the WSH FAQ years
ago.
I'm expanding on my short URL redirector so that it creates the link and
description for me and copies it to the clipboard so I can just paste into
the newsgroup post (my To-Do list is getting longer
http://www.wssdemo.com/Lists/To%20Do/).
Two reasons for the short link:
1. many URL's are V E R Y long and get broken by NNTP line breaks
2. The news groups are crawled/archived by search engines and if the source
moves (often the case with MS content or blogs) you get broken links
