Full Text catalog , WSS and Sql server 2000

hi,

Can someone please provide me the nature of the catalog that are created by
sharepoint for the search functionality of wss. I plan to create the
catalogs manually (because i dont have sql server 2000 but Yukon) and
populate them and see if search works.
