A1: With the way you have it set up, I don't think you can delete the old
site without losing the new content as well. You can, however, delete and
recreate the old site and then restore that backup to that site. To delete
the site, use central administrator, go to virtual server settings and click
"Remove Windows SharePoint Services from virtual server". Then check the
remove content database **warning**. When you recreate and extend it, you
can check to the option to create a new content database instead of using
the default.
**Warning** it is possible to have more than one site using the same
content database. Be very careful you don't delete the content database if
you have other sites still using it. If there are multiple sites using it,
just leave it in place. I think you can still create a new content database
when you extend the virtual server again.
A2: Those smigrate backups are completely portable. You can save it off
and restore it to any WSS server, anywhere.
