Error: Adding user to OU FAILED.

I am setting up a test of the "Server Farm" configuraion. When I try to add
a new site the operation ends telling me it "cannot complete this action",
and when I check the event log I see a message saying:

"#1e0046: Adding User "xxxxx6" to OU "SharePoint Users" in domain "YYYYYYY"
FAILED with HRESULT -2147467259.

I have set up the administrator account following directions in the
"Microsoft Windows SharePoint Hosting Configuration and Experience" white
paper so, in theory, the STSAdmin account should have rights to add users.

Any ideas?
