In addition to what Siegfried said about having to have Office 2003
installed on the client, to get presenece information you'll need the users
to be using the Windows IM product and be logged in with the same email
address as the one they use on the SharePoint site. This will give you their
presence status whereas Office will let you know additional info like if
they're free from meetings or not.
