Sharepoint logon fails intermittently

My company operates a Sharepoint site (not a Portal Server site)
accessible by internet users. Recently we have been running into a
problem though. About one out of four times any user (including
myself, a site administrator) tries to log in to the site with our
personalized login information, our login fails. We get the requisite
three tries, input the proper username and password each time, but
still end up with the "not authorized to view this page" screen.

If we shut down our browser (IE or Firefox are what we have been using
mostly) and then navigate back to the page after a minute or two, the
login works. I don't claim to be a Sharepoint guru and I'm having a
little trouble figuring out where to start. Anybody have any ideas?
