Authentication against AD

I'm new to Sharepoint Services so pardon the ignorant question.
How do I authenticate internet users (not joined to the domain) against the
AD so they can access a sharepoint site. I want them to be able to
upload/download/edit files from a document library. It works fine if I have
local user accounts on the sharepoint server, but not if I have the user
accounts on the AD. My Sharepoint server is a domain member, but not on a
domain controller.
