Hi..

Couldnt find a faq in this group so am asking instead.. have hunted on
the web and found a number of solutions but being a complete
sharepoint muppet, not many of them apparently work, so apologies if
this is in the faq for the group.

A sharepoint team services server has been dumped in my lap with 6
sharepoint-enabled virtual servers installed on it. Recently, we had
to move the sharepoint stuff to another server since the original was
dying so it fell to me to make sure the web sites were moved
successfully.

one way I found to accomplish this (barely) was using smigrate.exe in
the form of:

smigrate -r -w http://www.blah.com -f sharepoint1backup.bak.fw
p -u username -pw password

and this created fwp files that could apparently be restored to the
same server using smigrate again.

another was to just manually create .bak files using the
backup/restore pages in the sharepoint site administration pages.

Both of these files wouldnt restore onto the new server and in the
end, I had to ask the hosting company that the servers were hosted
with to take a hand and they informed me that the bak files had to be
installed onto the new server with MS Sql Server.

Everything was happy. I had no idea how they had got the database
files back onto the new server but after we copied the web html files
over , it was all happy doody.

Now, we want to run a scheduled backup every day of the database and
the actual web files and ftp it or something over to another server.

I'd use smigrate but never tested the fwp restore function (cant
restore to another server and scared sh*tless of restoring them on the
live one) so aint too sure about it.

Using the stsadm.exe, a' la script file:

cd \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server
Extensions\60\BIN

stsadm.exe -o backup -url http://www.blah.com -filename
d:\sharepointbackups\www.blah.com.dat

brings up the error :

The virtual server that is referenced here is not in the config
database.

which means absolutely squat to me and I cant find anything on the web
referring to it.
(hell, it took me a little under a week to discover we had team
services and not portal services, i know that little about sharepoint)

So.. I place myself in your hands. Could _anyone_ help with this prob?

I need to know what command to run to backup the database of a
specifid sharepoint ts site on a server.

I need to know (this isnt neccessary since i can get the hoster's to
do it for me but it'd be nice to know) how to restore the damn things
to either a formatted original server or a completely different
server.

I need to know why this godsforsaken web app doesnt have the slightest
idea what "user friendly" is when you want to move beyond point and
click!! AARRGGH!!

-slaps himself-

ah. thats better. needed that.

Any ideas, peeps? thanks in advance for any answers winging my way.

Steve
