You are in the right place for STS questions but there are very few people
left trying to answer them.

Unfortunately I don't have any knowledge of Discussion Server, however your
problems seem to lie outside Discussion Server as far as 1. is concerned.

You can not in STS use certain Document functions if you have any Office
version earlier than Office XP installed on your client. So for instance
Edit Document doesn't work at all (requires authorization; won't save back
to the STS site). There is no way round this, the functionality only came
with Office XP (which as you probably know was released at the same time as
STS).

On 2. there is no easier way. In the few cases I have had similar needs (for
instance an off-line copy of a web site), I have uploaded index.htm to the
doc lib and manually *on the server* created a lower directory. Note that if
you ever do a System Recheck it will find this lower directory and all those
files will be listed in the doc lib (which is usually NOT what you want).

The next version of the product (Windows SharePoint Services) allows you to
have a folder in a doc lib, so the problem is solved there.
