AD name fields in sharepoint designer email

Hi,
doing a workflow in sharepoint designer, the workflow send an email
with values from the fields in the sharepoint list the workflow is
attached to.
One of the list fields is a user/group field, so through sharepoint
you get the address book and check name icons and you can search your
active directory users and put a username in.
Then in sharepointdesigner when you access the field in an email using
'add look up to
body' it appears in the email in the format:
domain\username
I want to get it so it had the actual persons name which is also
storred in active directory.
I have SQL 2000 so I don't think I can access AD directly in
sharepoint designer without having 2005.
Does anyone know a simple way to get the active directory fields that
aren't in sharepoint designer into it, like first name, last name or
display name so I can use them in an email template?
Thanks
.
