Re: problem metadata pdf

1. I think I answered. You add metadata when you upload a Pdf file to a SharePoint site. This metadata is not added to the PDF file itself but is only in SharePoint fields. When you then copy the PDF file from the SP site to your hard disk you are copying the PDF file only not the metadata because that is only in SP along with the file.

When Office documents are uploaded to an SP site and metadata is added, this metadata (in most cases) as well as being in SP fields is also transfered to a Property in the Office document itself. Thus the document file contains the metadata.

2. Is a completely different question and I'm passing on it and leaving it to someone with a better knowledge than me of modifying search.

Hi Mike

thx for the response.
two extra questions:
1. why does the file properties of a pdf disappear after a upload/download in the file itself?

2. how can i tune the search result web part in order to make it show sharepoint-custom-properties?

grts

There is no link between the properties internal to a pdf document and SharePoint fields.

There is such a link between most Office document properties and SharePoint fields.

Hi,

sp2007 question:

when we upload office documents, the file properties (title, comments, author, ...) are taken along with the document. these properties are shown in search results (example the description in fixed query web parts)

Test procedure
1. locate a local pdf document 2. edit metadata (right click the file, properties, summary tab : fill in some values). 3. upload the pdf to a document library
4. download the uploaded document
5. check the properties : everything is empty
???

now do the same thing with an ms-office document, metadata will stay untouched.

my problem : the description (in the resulting xml of a search) property is allways empty for pdf documents

Anyone the same problem or a solution?
