Re: Why authentication before opening a document in document libra

Alex,

Both methods worked with some known disadvantages to the first method (Have
to input every single site I visit into the trusted sites list)

I went with the second method because I am not sure when I will need that
webclient service and have no clue as to what problems will be created by
turning this service off.

one other note, without using any of the suggestions I noticed I can hit the
cancel button when it requests the login information and the document will
load.

2 questions:

1. Using method 2 what will be the side effects of turning this service off
- Im almost certain it will affect something adversely or create another
problem.

2. Is there a fix/patch in the works for this problem?

Thanks for your help and suggestions with resolving this problem.

Hi Lem,

Thank you for posting back.

According to your feedback, it appears that you are encountering the known
issue related the Windows WebDAV redirector (now integrated with Windows
Vista, that replaces the msdaipp.dll used in the previews Office versions)
and WinHTTP.

In summary, WebDAV/ WinHTTP won't automatically pass credentials unless it
considers the web server to be a local server. This explains why it is
prompting for credentials twice, is a side effect of Office 2007 using both
WinInet and WinHTTP. In previous versions of the Windows WebDav redirector
relied on WinInet, in Vista it switched to WinHTTP instead of WinInet. In
this design the WebDav redirector uses the "medium" WinHTTP automatic logon
policy (WINHTTP_AUTOLOGON_SECURITY_LEVEL_MEDIUM) to connect to the Web
Folder.

So far, we can play around this behavior through either of the following
two workarounds.

Workaround 1: Stop the Webclient service
========================
1. Click Start > Run, input services.msc and press Enter
2. Locate the Webclient service and then stop it.

Workaround 2: Add a fake proxy server and port in Internet Explorer settings
==================
1. Open Internet Explorer > Click Tools > Internet Options
2. On the Connections tab, click LAN settings.
3. Enable "Use a proxy server for your LAN"
4. Input a fake proxy server address and a fake port.
5. Check "Bypass proxy server for local address"

After that, you can add the Internet websites' URLs to the Local Intranet
security zone so that Internet Explorer will bypass the proxy server to
access these websites.

1. In Internet Explorer' Internet Options
2. On the Security tab, click Local Intranet.
3. Click Sites > Click Advanced
4. Input the Internet websites you usually browse to the list.
5. Click OK twice.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Sincerely,
Alex Xie

Hi, I followed the suggestions but still came up with the same problem, do
you know what else I could try?

Hi Lem,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on my knowledge, this issue can be caused by the User
Authentication
setting in Internet Explorer security zone. I suggest we perform the
following steps to resolve this issue.

Step 1: Add the SharePoint site to the trusted site
==============================
1. Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options
2. On the Security tab, click Trusted and click Sites
3. Add the URL of the SharePoint site to the trusted sites list.
4. Click the "Custom Level" button under Trusted security zone
5. Scroll down to the button and select "Automatically Logon with
current
user name and password"
6. Click OK and restart Internet Explorer to check if the issue is
resolved.

Internet Explorer May Prompt You for a Password

Please check if the issue can be resolved. If the issue doesn't
disappear,
please check the Authentication type of the IIS virtual server.

Step 2: Check Authentication type
======================
It is a known issue that the user will be prompted with login
credentials
when accessing the SharePoint Explorer View or opening documents
stored
in
the SharePoint libraries. Therefore, please check the authentication
type
of this web application.

1. Open the IIS Manager, and right click the IIS website on which the
SharePoint web application is hosted.
2. Point to Properties.
3. Click the Directory Security tab, and click the Edit button.
4. Ensure only Integrated Windows authentication is checked.

More information
-------------------
You are prompted to enter your user name and your password when you
open
an
Office document in SharePoint Server 2007, in SharePoint Portal Server
2003, or in Windows SharePoint Services
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871155/en-us

If the above steps do not help in resolving this issue, I'd like to
collect
the following information for further research.

1. Does this issue occur when accessing the companyweb site from
intranet?
2. Does this issue occur on all client computers?
3. Does this issue only occur on Windows Vista-based computers?
4. What's the version of Office client program on the problematic
computer?

If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know. I'll be happy
to
be of assistance.
