I have seen it on several vista machines. I will have to go use some XP ones for a while to see if it comes up. It will not happen every time on any machine. It is very random.
The user clicks the link, Word launches, and then they get the log in prompt. I have emailed the image to you.
I will also have to test this with a .txt file and get back to you.
The site is already in the Intranet Sites zone so that windows authentication works automatically.

Hi There,
If you would like to continue to configure the SSO service for your server
farm, we can refer to the following TechNet article to complete the
configuration for SSO.
Configure single sign-on (Office SharePoint Server)

To narrow down the extra login prompt issue, please confirm the following
things with me:
1. Does this issue occurs on every client computer or occur on only some of
the computers?
2. Does this issue only occur on Windows Vista computers?
3. How does the user get this login prompt? Does this login prompt occur
when the user clicks the document to open it or when the user just right
clicks it and points to Save Target As to download it? To form a clear
picture, you may capture a screenshot of the exact scenario you are facing
so that I can form a clear picture. You may send the screenshot to
v-alxie@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
4. Does this issue only occur when opening Office document or occur on all
documents types, including .txt files?
In the meantime, I also suggest you follow the steps below to add the
SharePoint site to the trusted sites to give a try.
Add the SharePoint site to the trusted sites list
====================================
1. Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options
2. On the Security tab, click Trusted and click Sites
3. Add the URL of the SharePoint site to the trusted sites list.
4. Click the "Custom Level" button under Trusted security zone
5. Scroll down to the button and select "Automatically Logon with current
user name and password"
6. Click OK and restart Internet Explorer to check if the issue is resolved.
If anything is unclear or you need further assistance on this issue, please
feel free to let me know.
Sincerely,
Alex Xie
