Searching not working

Hi All,

I'm having a problem with the search option of my portal ... When I
"Search" for anything on my site I get the below message.. Hover I
know the file is there...

I am using SharePoint 3.0 central administration, the search service
is 'started'.

No results matching your search were found.

- Check your spelling. Are the words in your query spelled correctly?
- Try using synonyms. Maybe what you're looking for uses slightly
different words.
- Make your search more general. Try more general terms in place of
specific ones.
- Try your search in a different scope. Different scopes can have
different results.

It is probably a problem with the crawl settings but I'm a first time
user of SharePoint and I don't know where to look.
