C1 subareas?

We've been adding subareas to our SharePoint site, but for some
reasons the URLs are no longer showing the parent subarea, but instead
are showing an unknown prefix (C1, C2, C3, etc.). As an example:

Root
- Alpha
- Alpha 1
- Beta
- Beta 1
- Beta 2
- Gamma
- Gamma 1

The URL for Gamma 1 is "http://SPRoot/Gamma1/default.aspx";

However, if I add another subarea to Gamma, instead of the URL being
"http://SPRoot/Gamma2/default.aspx";, it's showing as "http://SPRoot/C2/
Gamma1/default.aspx"

If anyone can help me with this problem, I would appreciate it
