.LDF files and SharePoint Portal

Hi,
I have some questions about .LDF files and Sharepoint. At the moment we
have SharePoint Portal 2003 and SQL Server as our backend database. I'm
not a DBA, so I am trying to get my head around this.
1. What data do .LDF files contain? I'm referring to the file that is
like this: companyName_SITE_log.LDF
2. If we backup sharepoint using a FULL Backup today, could we delete
all the data in the transaction log (LDF file) once the data is backed
up? Also, how do i know that the transactions in the log file have been
committed to the database?
3. Is it safe to delete the data in the .LDF file or will it cause
other problems?
4. If we have done a FULL backup, and after this, we have deleted a
site from the SiteDirectory in SharePoint and want to restore it, is it
possible to restore these sites if we have deleted the data in the
transaction log (LDF file)? Can we restore the site from the backup?
thanks for your help, Maria k.
