Upgrading SQL from 2000 to 2005 in prep for MOSS - backup no workie

I've setup a test environment with a small famr and dup'd our portal on
it.
Upgraded SQL to SQL 2005.
All was well until I tried to do a backup with the SPS backup util.
The backup logs gripes:

Connection to SQL Server DEVSP02 FAILED

001F6451 CRI 8004D903 000016E0 Failed ConnectToServer

Nothing in the event logs on the SQL server.

Any one any clues? Searching found the same problem, but no answer...

this is driving me nuts.
