Alternatively, you can import external contacts to a sharepoint list in
your site and can modify "People Search" scope in "Shared Service
Provider".

To add list scope, Go to Central Admin, your Shared Service Provider,
Search Settings, View Scopes, Select "People" Scope, Edit properties
and rules, new rule, specify web address to imported list, click
include check box, click ok.

It will display when the next search update will happen. If you want
to force it, go to content sources on search settings page, select
local sharepoint server sites and click start full crawl.

It will take some time after crawl is complete to display the results.

addition to the regular AD users, they want to have external contacts
shown when doing a people search.

Our first approch was to create the external contacts as Contacts in
AD, and the change the LDAP filter to include both users and contacts
when importing profiles, but apparently this is not possible. It
generates an error that "The user account name can not be resolved
within the Directory Server".

My next thought was to create a custom DB with all external contacts,
and add this DB as a import connection to the profile import job. I
have searched the web but I have yet to find any usefull information on
this.

Any ideas on how to solve this?
