SPS2003 in an Extranet

Hi
I have an Intranet site using Windows Authentication. Everyone can access
the site without any problems when connected to the LAN, but as soon as they
are offsite, they encounter problems and timeouts.
The guidelines I get for exposing SPS2003 site as an Extranet propose I
create another site for the external employees. Is there no other way I can
allow both internal and external users to connect to the same site without
duplicating sites?
Also I don't want employees who are logged on the domain to enter their
username and password when they access the site.
Thanks in advance
walter
