The issue stems from the installer going to a remote computer for SQL Server. It is a bug with Beta 2 where the database server is running Windows 2000. It is trying to associate Windows 2003 security groups and cannot find them on the Windows 2000 machine and errors out.

The only workaround is to install using a database server that is hosted in a Windows 2003 Server.

Hello everybody,

I already installed Sharepoint 2007 several times, successfully. But
since I try to use an own SQL 2005 Server the installation failes. If
I installed Sharepoint with the build in database or with an SQL
Server 2005 Std. on the same Server everthing was ok, but now, with
the seperate SQL 2005 Std. Server I have the following exception:

Error appears at Step 5 of 9:

--> Failed to register Sharepoint services

--> An exception of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was
thrown. Additional exception Information: Windows NT user or group 'NT
AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE' not found. Check the name again.

For you information. First I thought it maybe is an user-permission
problem. But my user has all necessary rights.

I used the same DOMAIN user for everything. This user has local admin
rights at the Sharepoint Frontendserver (Webfrontend + Application
Server) and Login rights, DB creator and Security Admin rights at the
SQL Server.

Any ideas?!?

One more info: At the moment we have not changed to an Active
Directory Domain. So we are still within a NT Domain. This means my
Domain User is a NT Domain User. I know that Active Directory is, lets
say recommended, but without AD, Sharepoint works also. There are just
some features which will not work. And everything worked with the
Standalone Installation (Sharepoint and Database at one server)

Would be great if someone of you have some great ideas or solution!
