Yeah the copy and pasting from web browser or from Word can cause that problem. It is not just limited to stsadm, it is just exagerated by this application since there is such a long sequence of parameters begging for a copy and paste cheat ***.
Further to this:
I have also come across a problem with cutting and pasting the STSADM
statement from a web page.
Be warned.
The hyphens or minus signs (-) that appear on a web page aer not the
normal hyphens.
e.g. I copied the STSADM statement from this page

I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work.
But when I paste the statement into Notepad I instead get:
stsadm â?"o upgrade â?"url http://SharePoint.Alentus.com -forceupgrade
The â?" appear in DOS as a '-' and yet they are not.
Simple fix - Delete the strange â?" statements and replace with a
normal hyphen.
