Wildcard Search Issues

I am working for a client that wants a wildcard search. I tried
various options modifying the web part that is related to search,
however when I try the solutions from msd2d and other sites the people
search no longer works. Thus far someone has suggested Coveo, but my
client can not afford such a product. Is there another solution out
there?
