SPS 2003 + InfoPath Integration Question

Hi everyone,
I'm not really knowledgeable on InfoPath yet, but a user that is helping us
with what she wants to see in her Team Site in Sharepoint has this question.
Does anyone know if what she's asking for (see below) is doable? If so, what
specifically would I need to do in order to make this happen?
Thank you!

³Do you know whether it's difficult to create custom forms in Sharepoint that
can be used to read and update data in SQL Server? As I've been meeting with
folks regarding accreditation activities, I'm formulating ideas for managing
the project information that involve providing online forms for people to
update information directly in a database. I don't know whether it makes
more sense to create a separate application for this, or if there are links to
InfoPath, or if Sharepoint has capabilities within it.
I know this isn't a very good description of requirements yet - I'm still
formulating these. I'm just trying to get the "lay of the land" regarding
possible solutions and trying to avoid potential rework later.²
