have you tried increasing the file size limit?

I need to remotely backup my sharepoint files and everytime I hit the same
problems during the backup process:
Everytime I try to copy a file that is larger than 48,828 KB from the
sharepoint, I get a Dialog box that states:

Error Copying File or Folder
<filename>: Cannot Read from the source file or disk.

I get this regardless of how I attempt the backup. If I enter the
sharepoint document library in windows explorer view and copy a folder,
everything will work fine as long as no documents within are larger than the
apparent 48,828 KB limit. Otherwise it will fail with that error message.
I have backup software that does a bulk backup and it fails when it hits a
large file as well. Windows Backup? - either fails or can't see SharePoint's
virtual folder structure (I forget), Basically I have tried 5-6 different
backup processes and they all fail on the larger files, if they can see
SharePoint's virtual directories at all (I am calling it virtual since it is
actually stored on SQL Server DB from what I gather). I did find one that
will still fail for that file, but has the good programming to retry a few
times and finally skips the file and adds it to a list of files that were
skipped. Currently, I end up with 24 files out of 4500+ that SharePoint
refuses to release.
I can still retrieve the large files without any issues if I go through the
SharePoint interface. But I need a bulk backup that works. It might be a
timeout issue but I rather doubt it, I get the same error even on a 1Gbit LAN
connection. SharePoint just does not want to transfer the 48MB+ files except
through the standard SharePoint interface, it seems.

I know I could probably do a SQL Server backup of the main DB files, but
there are many other sites that are on the same server and I don't really
feel like grabbing all of their data in addition to my own. I also want to
save the files in the file folder format. The file/folder format makes it
extremely easy for me to quickly grab a file I need to restore. We tried the
FrontPage backup process, which would work, but I have to restore the entire
site to grab 1 file. Totally inefficient. With file folders I can take <1
minute to restore and FrontPage backups/restore takes over an hour.

So...anyone else have a similar issue or have some insight on how I can
resolve this issue? I need to develop a fully automated solution so that
when my contract is over, I don't leave the client with a half-baked disaster
recovery solution. What I have now works, it just requires a manual process
to finish the complete backup.
