Re: Installing sharepoint ... always fails

I am having the same exact issue. Are you installing on a domain
controller? I am. I tried installing with SQL 2005 first. Then removed
and went with the desktop version. Did you?
I am using a 192.168 address are you?
I have installed SPS many times and have never had this issue. It fails
when it gets to the part of the setup where it needs to open central
admin to create the database and virtual server.
Any other ideas?

Let me review the installation and see what went wrong.

- Next ... start install Sharepoint on a completely virgin server with
limited network connection.
- Install unpacks all the files to C:\programs files\STS2Setup_1033
- Install continues ... then changes to install MS SQL server desktop
engine, then back back to installing Sharepoint ... then new window please
wait while Setup Configures Sharepoint ... then IE opens with the error
mesage:
"There are errors in Windows SharePoint services setup. Extend Virtual
Server: The server instance specified was not found. Please specify the
server's address and port. "
Event viewer Application show's 7 messages:
- MS Sharepoint Services 2.0 - Install operation complete
- Peformance counters for MSSQL$SHAREPOINT ... loaded successfully
- Performance counters for WmiApRpl service were removed susccessfully
- Performance counters for WmiApRpl service were loaded susccessfully
- MS SQL Server Desktop Engine - install successful
- MS Sharepoint Services 2.0 - Update 'Windows SharePoint Services Service
Pack 2 WSSSP2' install successful
- MS Sharepoint Services 2.0 - Configuration successful
No other event logs are empty after install.
If you re-install overtop [choosing the complete option] you will get a
message "the configuration changes made to MS Sharepoint Services 2.0 will
not take affect until your computer has been restarted. But after a restart,
nothing has changed ... sharepoint looks and acts exactly the same. Each time
you reinstall this same message will appear.
So I can only assume that based on the event viewer logs that installation
was successful, but Sharepoint requires manual config in order to continue
the setup ?
Cheers

Its usually the password that you use during installation, typically a
service account or the administrative account that you slated for WSS.
From reading your above post though, it didn't even install and extend that
server though, so we have to look back at why that is happening. Is there an
entry in the vent log from the time your installation kicks out?
