Wait a minute. There are already index files for Portal and non-portal content.
You should be looking at the document counts for those sources which, by
default, get posted on a page already. Are you not seeing document increases in
the non-portal content display when you add documents to your site? If not,
then it is likely that you don't have Alerts and the timer service running, as
that is what kicks off the search indexing processes.
