question(s) about integrating the document library

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

hello experts,

i have been looking at the best way to use Sharepoint services for a
pilot intranet application.

i would like to take advantage of the presentation capability and
especially the document library capability, since it integrates well
with Word, however there are some tricky bits needed in order to use it
to my advantage. If i can't overcome this i shall have to resort to
doing a straightforward ASP.net application and host this in a page
renderer webpart.

I wish to set up my own relational database using SQL server. In this
database there is a master table and i want to set up a master-detail
relationship with documents as "detail records".

I intend to write a webpart that supplies a summary of the master
records from my database. I then want to feed the "Master ID" into the
filter for a document library webpart. Each document has an added
custom property called "Master ID". So when i select the master record,
the document library view adjusts to only display related documents as
default. It seemed preferable to do it this way rather than having a
separate folder for each master record, since the user might wish to
filter all documents or some other criteria.

The custom webparts will be developed using c# in conjunction with the
third part "SmartPart" facility. This looks like the development will
be much easier allowing me to drag and drop standard ASP components on
the part.

I've look at the document case handling demo but this seems to noddy
for my purposes.

so here are my questions:-

1) When i create a new document and upload it to the document library,
a dialog is displayed asking for the custom document properties. I
would like to have this form auto-populated with the current master ID
or preferably not have it displayed at all. Any ideas on how to achieve
this ?

2) How easy is it to use the webpart data connection facility to feed
the master ID from my webpart into the document library filter ?

3) I would like to handle queries of my database that include document
references. I believe that the document properties are held in the meta
data field in the sharepoint "docs" table. It seems that having to
parse this on the fly in order to get the "master ID" will be slow &
difficult, so i thought that i could maintain a detail table in my
database with references to the document library. This would have to be
maintained when documents are created, deleted etc.
I've seen something about intercepting document library events.
How can i intercept a document create event, grab the master ID from
the document, grab the document reference and put this into my own
document detail table in my database ?

4) i will be making extensive use of document templates at the server
that are used whenever documents are created. I understand that the new
Office tools (vs12) will have some easy ways to populate a document
with data from my own database. Would this facility be able to set up
the "Master ID" as explained above ?

5) Assuming i cannot wait or upgrade to the new Office, is there a way
to populate a new word document with data from my own database using a
server side word doc template ?

If anyone has tried this kind of thing any other advice would be
welcome,

thanks.
